Summary: I have provided knowledge, advice and coaching as a subject matter expert to the staff and directors of this highly successful civil construction company, to gain ACC WSMP Tertiary certification and facilitated continual improvement in the management systems to achieve and sustain ISO 9001 certification, 14001 certification, Kiwi Rail Pre-qualification, NZTA Pre-qualification and Site Safe membership.

Company Profile: MBD Contracting is a well-established, privately owned and operated, successful civil construction company with their main office located in Greymouth.

They provide a wide range of services including major earthworks, sea foreshore and river protection, civil construction, state highway and local council road treatments, subdivisions, retaining walls and driveway and section dig outs. They are also one of Kiwi Rail’s preferred suppliers of specialist Hi-rail plant and civil equipment on the West Coast, with a wide range of specialist Hi-rail plant and equipment used to assist Kiwi Rail with their daily maintenance.

To deliver these services and infrastructure projects, MBD Contracting are required to hold a number of certifications including ACC WSMP Tertiary certification, ISO 9001, 14001, Kiwi Rail Pre-qualification, NZTA Pre-qualification and Site Safe membership.

Solution

I have worked with MBD Contracting for over 5 years, initially providing support to the Directors and Staff to attain ACC WSMP certification.

MBD Contracting were one of my “straight to tertiary” clients. On their first audit in 2009 they attained tertiary certification, which they have retained by consistently demonstrating continual improvement in their management systems, injury prevention and working practices.

In recent years my work for MBD Contracting has evolved to focus on a number of key initiatives:

• A change management project to achieve ISO/AS/NZS certification for a fully integrated management system the embraces occupational health and safety, quality and environmental management by the end of 2017.
• Knowledge growth and personal development of the directors and staff to understand their obligations and duties under the 2015 Health and Safety at Work Act and changes or new ISO standards namely ISO 9001:2015 and the ISO DIS 45001.
• Supporting the directors in gaining a broader understanding of their due diligence and PCBU obligations.
• The adoption of new technology to facilitate operational improvements and provide greater visibility of risk assessments at multiple sites across the South Island.
• Establishing reporting that facilitates relevant, easy and real time monitoring of governance risk and compliance.
